This article represents a first step towards the development of a new framework to interpret the functions of Latin-Greek code-switching in the early modern period. The corpus used to develop this framework is the correspondence of Erasmus of Rotterdam, but the aim is to provide a systematic typology of functions that enables comparison with other corpora. The starting point is Rummel’s article ‘The Use of Greek in Erasmus’ Letters’ (1981), which will be updated and improved through new sociolinguistic insights and a close reading approach to our corpus. A first case study is the Erasmus-Karel Uutenhove correspondence, consisting of six preserved letters and featuring eleven Greek code-switches in total.
