This article offers a postsecular analysis of Charlotte Mutsaers’ Koetsier Herfst (2008), exploring how the novel intertwines religious and secular elements. By examining the narrative’s use of religious traditions, it becomes clear that the novel associates elements which are considered to be secular, such as radical activism and the importance of technology, with religion. The analysis situates Koetsier Herfst within the broader context of postsecular literary studies, emphasizing the instability of concepts such as religion and secularity. The article also delves into the theoretical complexity of postsecularism, particularly its challenge to the boundaries between religion and secularity. The results suggest that a more reader-oriented approach, attentive to how readers define religion and secularity, could be a fruitful direction for future research in postsecular literary studies.
