This paper introduces Judges 12:1-6, which describes how Gileadite guards stationed at the Jordan river crossings tried to identify Ephraimite refugees based on their accent and their pronunciation of the password ‘shibboleth’. The passage presents a challenge for translators due to the sound play involved and the difficulty of conveying the distinction between the ‘s’ and ‘sh’ sounds. This paper focuses on the translation of this specific passage in the Vetus Latina tradition via the Greek Septuagint. By doing so, it aims to address the question whether the Heptateuch of Lyon (VL 100) and the VL glosses in Spanish Vulgate manuscript are related or not from a traductological point of view. The conclusion reached is that these two VL traditions are very distinct in their treatment of Judges 12:6, and that the translations clearly display different translational norms.
