Abstract

This paper examines how literary society Nil Volentibus Arduum attempted to influence public opinion on theatre aesthetics in their comedy De gelukte list. First performed in 1682 in Amsterdam, this play features a discussion on theatre aesthetics between characters Eelhart, Willem, and Herman following their attendance of another NVA play, Andromaché. The meta-discussion questions whether a playwright should follow fashionable market trends, or adhere to stringent artistic and moral standards. The paper explores how NVA utilized rhetorical, theatrical and visual strategies in De gelukte list to shift public taste, contextualizing this within the rise of the connoisseur as described by Jürgen Habermas.
